Scarface - Howard Hawks (1932)

After seeing The Public Enemy (which I definitely recommend), I sought out other gangster films from that era expecting the same characteristics. The Public Enemy is honestly hilarious for its use of sexual innuendos, trying so hard to be provocative while submitting to the Production Code rules of the time. Apart from the humor, however, these two films are very similar.
Scarface shows a guy who gets caught up in the gangster life and by the time he realizes that it's a bad thing, it's too late. He loses everything. It's a good story, but it doesn't flow well. Tony's character seems to have no heart 99% of the movie, then suddenly does in the last 1%. So, that's my issue with it. Other than that, I enjoyed all the violence and thought it was done well for being 1932 for fuck's sake. Overall, it's a good watch, just could have been better, had the character been better developed.

If you're a film lover, watch it.
If you're not, don't worry about it.

Dancer in the Dark - Lars von Trier (2000)

Incredible. The purity of nature and whole-heartedness of the main character makes this film stand out among thousands of others. It also has a grimy reality to it that is strangely beautiful. As odd as this character is, we understand her and feel so heavily for her and commend her bravery. This is the von Trier I love... he knows how to capture human nature, which in later films is a bit horrific, but in this one, he chooses to capture the nature of a human who has a strong, loving, devoted heart.

You have to see this.
GO WATCH IT.
